Turning Over A New
Leaf
Kelly
Tobey Interviewed by Sheila Thistlethwaite
Dealing with change can take courage. It’s natural to fear
the unknown. Fortunately, there are many professionals who can help us
with change.
Kelly
Tobey, who refers to himself as a “Transformational Facilitator,”
frequently helps people going through changes in their lives. They
attend his workshops and visit him for one-on-one sessions because they
want to build a sense of confidence.
“Many
of us want our lives to be different. But, wrapped up in holding onto
the past and trying to be “in control”, we ignore the signals from
our deeper selves that tell us that it would serve us to make some
changes”, Kelly says.
“Often,
when you’re going through changes you are taking steps into
who-knows-what and it’s scary,” he explains. “You may want to
understand what is going to happen. But if that is what you are looking
for, you may be disappointed at first. I can’t predict your future.
What I will do is help support you in becoming more confident and
comfortable, or at least more willing to keep moving forward, even
without understanding how things will unfold.
“Once
you are comfortable enough to keep going into the unknown, it makes room
for real changes to take place because you are no longer dealing with
old patterns of behavior and habitual thinking which keep you from
changing.”
Going
through change can make us feel confused. Tobey says people need
reassurance that they are on the right path.
“Getting
started on the road to change means finding that inner voice and
listening to what it is telling you.”
“One
of the things I ask people to do is check into their own deeper feelings
— their intuition, their inner knowing — and see if the change is
true for them. If it is, they can have confidence through the transition
period.”
When
you put trust in your intuitive guidance it can be amazing where it will
take you,” he says.
It
takes courage to change and our courage is likely to waver. Are we on
the appropriate path? Are we doing the best thing? The little successes
we achieve along the way help build our confidence and encourage us to
continue.
